Creating spaces that promote learning, foster creativity and inspire a student along the way is a huge challenge. If you are the facility manager, a designer or a teacher you know this.

At Mannington we are Crafted with Purpose. Flooring is the largest surface area, and we think it has the potential to make a positive impact and set the tone for a space. We produce flooring products with an array of styles and performance features to fit your spaces needs. The newly completed Mater Center at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, MD is proof of this.

The new Mater Center affords students opportunities to be active in the construction of their own knowledge. The center provides for students the freedom to be in community with new dinning, lounge areas, cafe, art rooms and the theater. The Arts are a significant part of the curriculum at Stone Ridge. Research reveals that the participation in art affords students higher levels of civic engagement and social tolerance. Additionally, creative expression limits stress and promotes mental well-being.

“It’s venue for collaborative engagement. The creative campus movement places the arts at the center of academic life,” said Elizabeth Cunha, Performing Arts Department Chair. “Art plays an important role in shaping the future of students, and it often propels their imagination and creativity.”

When it comes to art and the important role it plays in learning, there is no better tie than The Hocus Collection. This carpet collection inspired by Larry Bell's Standing Walls. The modular carpet collection that speaks to Bell's study of light, the nature of surface and its interaction with space. The result is three geometric patterns that use color, line work, shape, and texture to produce magical juxtapositions of surface and dimension, clarity and ambiguity.

“The feedback from students, families, and faculty has been unanimous in approval for this kind of inspirational space," said Andrew Harrington, Director of Facilities. Equally important though we wanted to ensure that the products installed perform under the kind of abusive conditions that you expect on a K-12 campus.”

Harrington noted that he favors the varying soft surface flooring backing platforms that Mannington Commercial provides. Traditional modular tile, which provides for both flexibility and ease of replacement; vinyl back broadloom with fused seams, which provides for waterproof barrier against moisture; and modular cushion, which provides for acoustical remedies.

“Mannington Commercial is our flooring standard," said Harrington. "It complements our aesthetic requirements and long-term performance needs.”
